abstract = "The identification of possible causes of deforestation can lead to
actions for controlling and preventing deforestation, preserving
natural landscapes in vulnerable biomes such as the Amazon.
Deforested areas are used for generating profit, increasing the
likelihood of demands for new land. To explore if deforestation
areas are linked to better socioeconomic conditions, this study
determined whether there is a relationship between deforestation
and income variables in rural census tracts of Santar{\'e}m, PA,
for the years 2000 and 2010. Data from the Brazilian Census were
used to characterize the socioeconomic profile of the region, and
compared to maps of deforestation and economic activities by
Prodes and TerraClass. We found census tracts with low monthly
income and few areas cleared in 2000, and tracts with high income
in 2010 with the largest deforested area. A high percentage of
deforested areas and also high income are marked by the presence
of mechanized grain farming, ranching, farming and mining.
Exploratory analysis has shown that we cannot assert that the high
income generated in rural regions of Santar{\'e}m is the only
factor responsible for deforestation, stressing the need for
investigating the influence of other variables, such as land use
and land occupation in the process of deforestation.",
